Both Moray and Maras archaeological sites has been prominent since Inca civilization. Infact, these high altitude sites have contributed vastly to te economic growth of the community and the the region in general.
Maras is home to the salt flats. These salt pools are nestled on a side of a hill. Locals here continue to practise the traditional farming method introduced in the region by Incas, Solar Evaporation Method.
The salt farmers let in natural spring water into the geometric shaped puddles from the nearby hot spring. They let the water evaporate naturally. This leaves behind the crystals of salts which they manually scrape out.
Maras Salt are pinkish in colour and have a good nutritional value. It tastes a little different. Infact, they say if you have tasted Maras Salt, you won’t be fond of the regular salt.
Moray has been an important part of Incan civilization. It is because of this place, Peru is now produces over 800 varieties of potatoes and different types of corns.
This was more like an agricultural laboratory to Incas. The farming terrace is quite distinct here. It is a massive hole on the ground. The terrace is more like steps to walk down.
Each level has a different temperature. There is a difference of 15 degrees from te top to the bottom of the terrace. The Incas tested the growth conditions of different crops here.
