Tambopata, the city is named after the renowned Tambopata river that originates at the world’s highest navigable lake – Lake Titicaca and flows down to the Peruvian jungle. Tambopata National Reserve Peru is rich in biodiversity. It is home to 650 distinct species of birds and over 1500 species of butterflies.
A group of native community called Ese Eja has been dwelling in Tambopata for generations. They maintain their traditional way of life and continue to speak Quechua. This is one the best Tambopata tours to get a closer insight to their life and culture.
One of the unmissable sights are the Macaws Clay Lick. Colpa Colorado is the world’s largest macaw clay lick located in Tambopata National Reserve Peru. The national park is home to over eight species of Macaws, this includes Scarlet Macaws and green bellows macaw.

Puerto Madonado Airport / Bus Terminal
Depends on your flight/bus’s arrival time
On your arrival to Puerto Maldonado, our crew will be picking you up from the bus terminal or airport. Then in our private transport, we will be driving you to our office in the city. We have a baggage storage facility here so you can leave your big bags and carry the ones you will need during the tour.
We will then embark on a road trip for an hour to the boat pier. Here we will be boarding our motor boat to the lodge. The boat ride offers beautiful views of the birds and animals on the river banks including giant otters.
After checking in to the lodge, we will serve a typical meal for lunch. After lunch, we will start exploring the Amazon Rainforest by hiking on one of the beautiful trails.
Along with our local guide you will be spotting different species of animals, birds, insects, butterflies and snakes. We will then return to the lodge for dinner.
Early in the morning, at 0530, we will be leaving the lodge and head to the 40 metres high canopy. It offers a panoramic view of the lush tropical jungle below. You will have the opportunity to spot different species of monkeys as well.
From here we will be taking the boat back to the Tambopata National Reserve Peru. After a three kilometres hike through a beautiful trail we will reach Sandoval Lake. This is a true hidden gem.
Here you will be able to spot different types of animals and birds. We will be stopping for lunch amidst the lush tropical jungle. Then we will take the boat to get a closer look at the animals. The lake is rich with giant otters and black caimans.
After witnessing the sunset, we will return to the lodge. Our local chef will be serving an authentic Amazonian meal for dinner.
After breakfast, we will hike into the lush rainforest and get to a small scenic river. Here we will stop to fish some piranhas. We will carry them back to the lodge where our chef will prepare your lunch using the piranha.
After lunch, you will have some free time to relax and unwind on the hammocks with the sound of chirping birds amidst the world’s largest tropical jungle.
Later in the evening, we will head out to experience zip lining with our professional qualified instructor. After witnessing the sunset, we will be returning to the lodge.
After relishing a typical Amazonian breakfast, we will be visiting the Macaws Clay Lick. Our local expert will share some facts about the clay lick and how it benefits the birds who flock in literally in hundreds every morning.
We will then sail to a local community where you will be introduced to their way of life, customs and culture. We will then stop for lunch before sailing back to the boat pier in Puerto Maldonado.
Once in Puerto Maldonado, we will be driving you to a traditional local market where you will see some exotic tropical fruits. After this experience, we will be transferring you back to the airport or bus terminal.
