Inca Jungle Trek Itinerary

Day 1Cusco – Abra Malaga Pass - Santa Maria

The first day of the Inca Jungle Trek begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Cusco at 6:50 AM. We will drive for about three hours through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We will be passing picturesque villages and rolling farmlands. As the road climbs, we will reach Abra Málaga. This is the highest point of the day at 4,330 meters (14,206 feet). Here, the dramatic views of snow-capped peaks and winding valleys will prepare us for the adventure ahead.

After arriving at San Luis at 3,200 meters (10,498 feet), our team will provide a safety briefing. They will also equip us with mountain bikes, helmets, and gloves. Before starting, we will have time to practice and get comfortable with our bikes. This preparation will ensure a safe and enjoyable ride.

Once ready, we will begin a thrilling descent on the Inca Jungle Trail, biking down quiet mountain roads. The air will grow warmer as we leave the Andes behind and approach the lush tropical jungle.

The journey will cover approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles). It will take around three to four hours, with stops to admire the scenery. The landscapes will change dramatically, from high-altitude plains to dense vegetation and cascading waterfalls.

Uncover History and Adventure: From Huamanmarca to Santa Maria on the Inca Jungle Trail

Around midday, we will stop at Alfamayo for a picnic lunch. Here, we will have time to relax, refuel, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Afterward, we will continue biking downhill toward Huamanmarca, an archaeological site at 3,076 meters (10,091 feet). Our guide will provide an insightful tour of this fascinating site, revealing its connection to the Inca civilization.

From Huamanmarca, the road will lead us further into the jungle as we descend to 1,500 meters (4,921 feet). We will reach Santa Maria, a small, charming town nestled at the edge of the jungle. Here, the day’s activities will come to a close, but an optional adventure awaits.

For those seeking an extra thrill, white-water rafting on the Urubamba River will be available. This experience includes navigating Class II and III+ rapids with professional equipment, such as helmets, windbreakers, and life vests. Please note that rafting is offered only during the dry season (April to December) and is available for an additional fee. It is mandatory for participants to know how to swim.

If rafting isn’t for you, you can spend the evening unwinding at the hostel. You might choose to browse the internet, explore local shops, or enjoy a cold beer before dinner. Dinner will feature delicious, traditional Peruvian dishes, providing the perfect end to an active day.

We will spend the night at a family-run hostel in Santa Maria. This day of the Inca Jungle Cusco adventure will leave us with unforgettable memories and a sense of anticipation for what lies ahead.

With our energy renewed, we will set off on a gradual uphill hike, following trails that meander through dense vegetation and scenic vistas.

The path will grow steeper as we ascend, offering glimpses of the jungle’s unique flora and fauna. Along the way, we will pause at a family-run restaurant in Santa Maria, where hammocks will invite us to relax. Here, we can sip on refreshing beverages while taking in views of the surrounding coca plantations. The family’s playful monkey will add a touch of entertainment, making this stop both restful and memorable.

From there, we will continue on the Inca Jungle Trail, gradually transitioning to the historic Inca Trail. Had the most amazing 4 days in the Macchu Picchu region ! Everything was well organized so that we had nothing to worry about from the beginning to the end of the tour, and everything is included in the price ! Our guide Carlos was super nice, interesting, funny and motivating ! He is very experimented and knows everyone on the way to Machu Picchu which allowed us to have great degustations in the jungle ! The accommodation is quite basic but he arranged so that couples could stay together and friends could stay together too ! We met a lot of amazing people during those 4 days and couldn’t recommend more ! Competitive price for an amazing adventure.
