Note: Smart and light packing is the key to this classic trail hike. After all, too much luggage will make the multi-days walk less enjoyable, whilst dropping essential items may make the hike memorable but all for the wrong reasons.
In this post, we have listed the essentials that every trekker needs to carry – whether he/she decides to hike in the rainy or dry season, or for the first or the fifteenth time.
We termed the listed items as ‘nice to have items’ which won’t make or break your trip, but carrying them along will make the entire experience a little bit more comfortable.

Without a passport, you cannot enter the Inca Trail. At the initial point, your passport details are checked and verified. Also, for entering Machu Picchu you need your passport and suitable photocopies. Note, not everywhere the substitute for the original passport is permitted. In short, no passport means, no Inca Trail. Don’t forget your passport!!!
At the Inca trail, you will feel too cold or too wet at some point, whether you hike in the dry season (April – October) or in the wet season (November – March).
Note – The trail requires you to carry the right clothing that is suitable for all seasons and comfortable for re-wear.
The weather varies on the trail, whether it’s rain or not. It is always chilly in the morning and hot during the late afternoon. To deal with this, we prefer to tell hikers to carry vest & shots and some warm clothes and extra layers to wrap their body.
Make sure that your hiking shoe/ boot hybrid is waterproof and of the best quality. When you are choosing your pair – make sure it fits you well and don’t bite your toes.
Inca Trail requires lots of walking and sometimes on rough routes. So, you must carry toiletries for making your walk more pleasant. The list includes:
Try to carry basic medications and first- aid kit that includes medicines for stomach problems, and ointments. Also, include any medications that you specifically need.
It never hurts to carry a basic first aid kit for your person during your Inca trail trek!
Indeed, you will not need a lot of money on the trail; it is still a good idea to carry some cash with you. As you will go along, few small and locally- run stores are installed throughout the trail and you will need to pay for any goods you want.
Apart from listed essentials, you need to carry enough food supplies and personal water bottles for quenching your thirst. Also, don’t forget to pack a flashlight as it is necessary for navigating around your campsite after dark.
